Friday October 3, 2003
"...two songs that really stand out that year are 'Sweet Pea' and 'Hooray For Hazel,' both by Tommy Roe. Without wanting to muck this up any futher, one could assert Roe invented the genre himeslf with 'Sheila' in the summer of '62. Later hits such as 'Dizzy' and 'Jam Up and Jelly Tight' are truly Bubblegum.

As for the nameless, faceless music you describe, the answer is still an enthusiastic YES! 'Indian Giver' is an all-time fave, as is 'Beg, Borrow, and Steal' by the Rare Breed, later to be called the Ohio Express. The music was infectious and irresistable. It's like 'I know I shouldn't like this stuff, but...' 'Gimme Gimme Good Lovin'' by the Crazy Elephant from the end of '69 was another one.

Tony Burroughs and Joey Levine put out early 70's Bubblegum like 'Love Grows Where My Rosemary Goes,' by the Edison Lighthouse, 'United We Stand,' by the Brotherhood of Man, 'My Baby Loves Lovin'' by the White Plains, 'Gimme Dat Ding' by the Pipkins, and 'Life Is A Rock, But the Radio Rolled Me' by Reunion, among others. All were fictitious groups, although groups would sometimes later be created to capitalise on the hits..." -- LMW28IF
