From Our Forum: Ed Ames' "Who Will Answer" LP

Thursday April 1, 2004
"This past weekend, I got reacquainted with a favorite album of my childhood - ' "Who Will Answer?" And Other Songs Of Our Time' by Ed Ames (RCA Victor). 'Our Time' was 1968, and nine of the album's 11 tracks were 'adult-pop' covers of recent 'young people's' hits: Blowin' In the Wind; Yesterday; Monday, Monday; Massachusetts (BeeGees); I Wanna Be Free (Monkees); Cherish; The Other Man's Grass Is Always Greener (Petula Clark); Can't Take My Eyes Off You; and There's A Kind of Hush (All Over the World). Of course, one of Phil Spector's own, Perry Botkin Jr., was arranging and conducting.

Of the above, 'Monday, Monday,' 'I Wanna Be Free' and 'Massachusetts' come off best; Ed overdoes it on 'Blowin' In the Wind' and 'Yesterday,' and seems uncomfortable with 'The Other Man's Grass...' And though he does his best with it, 'Cherish' just isn't suited for a solo voice.

As 'adult' renditions of 'young sounds' go, this isn't bad; Ed actually seemed to have some feel for the music." -- Alpha-Charlie

Years ago I was caring for an elderly aunt. She had an album by Ed Ames and one song, in particular I truly loved. I can’t find it anywhere. The song is titled, “Nikki,” and was written by Burt Bacharach. I have several instrumental versions but would love to have the one Ed Ames sang. Any ideas?

Thanks in advance.

Here is a link to a “songbook” of Hal David songs that includes Ed Ames’ version of “Nikki”. I’m assuming the “songbook” is an album of sorts.

Good luck. I hope this is what you’re looking for.
