"There's never been another time [the 60s]. Oldies stations nowadays attempt to emulate the sounds and styles, but they come off crass and commercial. Almost like a parody of 60's radio.

I'm sure AM radio really came alive in the late 50's/early 60's era, but it was just bursting at the seems with new and diverse sounds non-stop through the latter half of the 60's.

And we had input as to what they played! You could call your local station and actually talk to the DJ. Many would emcee local concerts, do high school dances, own nightclubs, and even manage some of the artists. I remember contests where you could win the opportunity to have a popular jock come to your home and do your birthday party. Or, they just might do it if simply asked. Always talking to the kids, finding out what they like.

They didn't just play the music - they were into it. They didn't just officiate the scene, they were a part of it.
