The inventors of New Orleans' brand of funk helped perfect the genre, while adding a distinctly local flavor heard on some of the city's greatest '60's soul tunes. In the '70s, however The Meters really took off, both as sessionmen and artists all their own, until disco and the business conspired to kill them off.
