Randy Newman began as a "legitimate" (if twisted) songwriter, graduated to being the social satirist everyone loved to hate, then entered the family business and ironically became part of the family-friendly Hollywood establishment. THIS was one of his more oddball early successes in UK. I would say that they “Britished Up” the lyrics a bit, but seeing as this is the original that came out a full year before Newman’s own version (and four years before Nilsson’s), it’s actually more like those two “Americanized” them.
