Follow me on:

The past year took a heavy toll on the remaining artists who made the popular music of the '50s, '60s, and '70s, including more than a few rockers who, even this far on, died before their time. The oldies artists who died in 2012 not only encompassed all areas of pop, country, soul, and even jazz, they included, as always, quite a number of unsung musicians and songwriters who -- whether you realized it or not -- gave you some very happy moments indeed. Here's a list of the musicians of the oldies era who passed away over the last year.

Yes, we lost many last year, starting with two legends Johnny Otis and Etta Jame a couple of days apart, who had worked together and were very close. Blue Grass legend Earl Scruggs, Disco stars Donna Summer and Robin Gibb, “Moon River” Andy Williams; Herb Reed, Cleveland Duncan, Earl Carroll, Donald “Duck” Dunn and Jimmy Jones from 1950′s Doo-wop/R&B and Bob Babbitt from the unhearlded Funk Brothers. Dorothy McGuire from another era. Kitty Wells, one of the original country stars. Writers and producers Hal David and Frank Wilkson. They will be missed.
