Review: Elton John's The Diving Board

He's spent most of his career fleshing out the oddball characters and romantic casualties penned by longtime lyricist Bernie Taupin, but on his 30th (!) album -- his first solo studio outing since 2006 -- Elton John teams up with producer T-Bone Burnett and pulls off a minor miracle, crafting a stripped-down song cycle with an emotional landscape darker than any he's ventured into before. The result isn't necessarily ready for the radio, but it's the most real Elton's ever been. Read my review of Elton John's The Diving Board here.
