Pick Hit Of The Week

Michael McDonald: Motown Two
Label: MotownThis smooth R&B crooner -- ex of the Doobie Brothers, for you youngsters out there -- scored one of 2002's most surprising hits with his adult-contemporary take on classic Motown hits. For any other entertainer, this might be cause for cringing, but McDonald's blue-eyed soul is jsut as valid as the brown-eyed variety, and since one of his problems has been inconsistent songwriting, this second volume offers yet another way to dig his pipes without hating yourself for it.

Rod Stewart: Stardust...The Great American Songbook, Vol. 3
Label: J-RecordsLove or hate his current incarnation as a cocktail lounge singer for aging boomers, you can't deny that it's given Rod the Mod a career boost even he didn't see coming. Like Michael McDonald, Stewart's found a niche by putting old wine in new bottles, but since Stewart was already one of rock's greatest interpretive singers, you could do worse with a collection of pre-war pop. Just don't expect him to rock anymore.

Tony Bennett: Fifty Years: The Artistry of Tony Bennett
Label: SonyThis box set is an update of 1991's justly-acclaimed Forty Years multidisc retrospective, but an update was needed: that box set helped revitalize Bennett and make him relevant to a generation not old enough to remember his first go round. This new set replicates the older one, remasters it yet again, and adds highlights from his last decade of career renaissance, making it one of the rare repackaging experiments that works.

William Shatner: Has Been
Label: SonyYes, he's back. This Star Trek alumnus and Priceline spokesman has finally, with the help of piano-pop mainstay Ben Folds, created a follow-up to 1968's epochal anti-classic The Transformed Man. The difference this time is that he's in on the joke, and not butchering Dylan and the Beatles; this modest yet deeply weird collection of mostly-original tunes written with Folds works as an examination of... well, of being a has-been. Sort of. Want to freak people out at parties? Here's just the thing.
