Pick Hit Of The Week

James Brown: Greatest Hits

Label: Collectables
The Collectables label loves to put out bargain-basement collections of oldies hits, and, as with most $7 CDs, you get what you pay for. This is not a bad group of early-70s funk tracks from James -- unless you mean "bad" in another way. While $7 isn't too much to ask for copies of "Funky President" and "It's Too Funky In Here," for example, it may still leave you wondering about obscure titles like "For Goodness Sakes, Look at Those Cakes."

Pick Hit Of The Week

The Bee Gees: Number Ones

Label: Polydor
Well, why not. Every other major oldies act has had one by this time - a collection of Number One hits, remastered with the latest technology (or nearly so). And, like its counterparts, this "Number Ones" collection fudges the truth quite a bit. This means you get "World" and "Don't Forget To Remember" and "You Win Again," not to mention the new Maurice tribute track "Man In The Middle," but not some other big hits which also fail the Number One criteria, like "To Love Somebody" and "Nights On Broadway," and some songs which DO fit the criteria, at least in some countries ("Run To Me," "Love So Right"). Still, as a single-disc collection that straddles both their BritPop AND Disco eras, this CD is one of a kind.

Pick Hit Of The Week

John Lennon: Acoustic

Label: Capitol
Nine of these 16 songs -- all acoustic, all John -- have already been released on 1998's Anthology box set, so those of you who own it may want to think twice before purchasing this single-disc compilation. Or maybe not. Because the other seven are arguably better, and completely unreleased, demo versions of well-known Lennon songs. Serious Lennon collectors already own this stuff, but if you just want to hear John unadorned, this is the first (and, so far, only) place to go.
