What are the legendary surf music songs and artists?

By Robert Fontenot, About.com

Question: What are the legendary surf music songs and artists?
Answer: When it comes to vocal surf, the Beach Boys and Jan and Dean stand head and shoulders above the rest, but instrumental surf involves a bit more digging -- it was always more of a regional phenomenon than a national one, and many of its best songs didn't even reach national consciousness back in the day. Here's a list of the most influential and historically important bands, along with their best-known songs:

The Astronauts, "Baja"
The Bel-Airs, "Mr. Moto"
The Centurions, "Bullwinkle, Pt. 2"
The Chantays, "Pipeline"
Dick Dale and the Deltones, "Let's Go Trippin'," "Misirlou," "Banzai Washout," "Night Rider," "Surf Beat"
The Lively Ones, "Surf Rider"
The Marketts, "Out Of Limits," "Surfer's Stomp"
Jack Nitzsche, "The Lonely Surfer"
The Surfaris, "Wipe Out," "Point Panic," "Surfer Joe"
The Pyramids, "Penetration"
The Revels, "Church Key"
The Tornadoes, "Bustin' Surfboards"
The Ventures, "Walk, Don't Run"
