Was Buddy Holly the first to double-track or "overdub" his vocals?

By Robert Fontenot, About.com

Question: Was Buddy Holly the first to double-track or "overdub" his vocals?
Answer: No, but he may have been the first rock performer to do it. With "Words of Love," Holly began using a technique that only pop musicians had utilized to that time, recording a vocal and then playing it back and singing along to it while recording both takes at once. Known as "double-tracking," this device later became known as "overdubbing" when advances in recording equipment made layering tracks even easier.
