Did Buddy Holly "invent" the modern rock and roll band?

By Robert Fontenot, About.com

Question: Did Buddy Holly "invent" the modern rock and roll band?
Answer: In a way, he did. Certainly there were rock bands before Buddy, but many were just vehicles for songs -- their own, but often others -- who basically went into the studio and recorded their live act. Buddy Holly and the Crickets were rock and roll's first fully self-contained rock band, crafting its own songs, adapting other songs they personally liked, creating its own sound in the studio, all under one band (not label) producer and with more or less complete creative control. It's the template which most modern rock bands -- starting most notably with the Beatles -- have employed to the present day.
