Dewey still sounds like Dewey, which is important, and even when the guys come dangerously close to rocking out, like the cover of the Fountains' "Work To Do," it's more "Sister Golden Hair" than TRL. The group themselves apparently even felt good enough about this material to include a second live disc, a reprogrammed run-through of their own "History: America's Greatest Hits," performed live in the XM satellite radio studios on October 23, 2005. (Although you could be cynical and accuse them of hedging their bets.) "Here and Now" remains the best thing they've done since their heyday, but the only song that stands up next to their classic hits is a cover of Nada Surf's "Golden," meaning it remains to be seen whether America The Band can reintroduce itself in a way that demands our attention. For the epitome of California mellow, that's gonna be hard to do.
