Elvis Presley's Burial & Grave

Elvis' burial began with a long procession down the street that bore his name, a white hearse and seventeen white limousines behind, ending at Forest Hill Cemetary. The 900-pound copper coffin was carried by pallbearers Jerry Schilling, Joe Esposito, George Klein, Lamar Fike, Billy Smith, Charlie Hodges, Gene Smith, and Dr. George Nichopoulous. A small service was then held in the mausoleum, followed by the paying of respects from family and friends. Elvis' father, Vernon, was the last to pay respects, kissing the coffin and repeating "Daddy will be with you soon." Elvis was interred at 4:30 pm CST.

Elvis was buried wearing a white suit and a blue shirt, with his signature TCB logo ring brought in by Vernon and a metal bracelet placed, with assistance, by daughter Lisa Marie. A cylinder with Elvis' name, birth and death dates was included for future identification.

Elvis Presley is buried on the grounds of Graceland, his mansion in Memphis, Tennessee (3764 Elvis Presley Boulevard, in Memphis, Tennessee), specifically in the Meditation Garden that lies next to the pool. Originally Elvis was buried in Forest Hill Cemetery at 1661 Elvis Presley Blvd. next to his mother, Gladys, but after a failed break-in by graverobbers, it was moved to its present location on October 3rd, 1977. Daughter Lisa Marie stated in 1999 that she was troubled by the number of tourists who visit the site every day and would like the grave moved to a private location.

The crypt that Elvis was interred in at Forest Hill is empty now, preserved for tourists, but it is available for sale -- at a reported price of over one million dollars.

Vernon did indeed follow his son quickly, dying two years later of what some say was a broken heart.
