Question: What are the best girl-group CDs?
Answer: If you want an introduction to the girl-group sound, Rhino's Girl Group Greats and its follow-up, More Girl Group Greats are great places to start, in that order. For a more thorough examination, check out Rhino's earlier comps Best of the Girl Groups Volume 1 and Volume 2 and also The Girl Group Sound: 25 All Time Greatest Hits From Red Bird Records. If you really want to immerse yourself in all styles of girl group music, however, you'll want the four-disc box set Girl Group Sounds: Lost & Found, which contains a wealth of hard-to-find classics.
Even rarer are some of the selections on the acclaimed UK label Ace's four-volume Early Girls series, which mixes Fifties and Sixties female bubblegum with the real girl group sound. Finally, there are several excellent compilations of individual girl group acts like The Supremes, Martha and the Vandellas, The Shirelles, The Ronettes, and The Crystals.
