Question: Who were the classic girl group producers?
Answer: Phil Spector towers above all other producers in the minds of many girl-group aficionados, mainly because the rise of his patented "Wall of Sound" technique paralleled the girl group phenomenon perfectly. George "Shadow" Morton, who created classic Shangri-Las hits like "Leader Of The Pack" and "Remember (Walking In The Sand)," is also well-regarded. However, most girl group producers didn't invent their own style, as these did, but were often house songwriters allowed to produce their own hits (Holland-Dozier-Holland for Motown, for example, or the Red Bird label's Lieber and Stoller, or any of Don Kirschner's songwriters at the Brill Building). Other notable girl-group producers include Quincy Jones (Lesley Gore) and the Tokens of "The Lion Sleeps Tonight" fame, who produced and played the backing instruments on the Chiffon's "He's So Fine."
