1954: Record promoters officially begin phasing out 78s and giving 45s to radio DJs instead.
1962: Elvis Presley completes filming on his 11th movie, Girls! Girls! Girls! Four years later to the day, his 21st (!) film, Paradise, Hawaiian Style, opens in US theaters.
1969: Having already been fired for his worsening drug use, Brian Jones officially announces that he is leaving the Rolling Stones, saying that he "no longer see(s) eye to eye (with the group about) the discs we are cutting." In less than a month he will be found dead.
1970: Deep Purple's touring van is stopped and impounded at an East German checkpoint after the band travels just a little too close to the Soviet border.
1974: Yes keyboardist Rick Wakeman leaves the group for a solo career.
1991: Bruce Springsteen marries his second wife, singer Patti Scialfa, at the home that already share in Beverly Hills.
1996: Singer/songwriter Carole Bayer Sager marries her third husband, Los Angeles Dodgers CEO Robert Davy.
1998: Paul McCartney holds a memorial service at St. Martin in the Fields Church in Trafalgar Square, London, for his wife Linda, who had succumbed suddenly to breast cancer a few months earlier. George and Ringo attend, as do Elton John and Billy Joel; the 700-plus gathering sings Paul's "Let It Be" en masse in tribute to her life and activism.
2006: Barbara Streisand announces an upcoming tour, her first full tour in a decade.
2008: Rolling Stone publishes its list of the Top 50 Guitar Songs of all time. The Top 5, in order: "Johnny B. Goode," "Purple Haze," Cream's live version of "Crossroads," "You Really Got Me," and "Brown Sugar."
2009: New York's legendary Apollo Theatre celebrates its 75th anniversary with a concert featuring, among others, The O'Jays and Patti Labelle. During the proceedings, Labelle and Quincy Jones are inducted into the venue's Hall of Fame.
