Review: Diana Ross: Blue

Sunday July 2, 2006
Current trends being what they are, there was perhaps no better time to release this, arguably the most famous of Motown's "lost" albums -- a 1972 recording of jazz-pop standards that picked up where Miss Ross' recent triumph in Lady Sings The Blues left off. But were Diana's vocal abilities up to the task? My latest review, complete with album data, tracklistings, and more, explains why this may not be for the casual Diana fan -- or serious aficionados of the genre, either.

I am an avid fan of Diana’s music, and found Blue to be another favorite. Each time I listen to it I wish there were more recording to hear. There should have been an extended version of “In my Solitude”. But then I can’t get enough of that fine and mellow voice.

Diana Ross’s “Blue Album” is just plain “Beautiful!” Her vocal ability during the recording of this album was truly up to par and her appreciation for jazz really shines through. I can’t get enough of listening to this entire CD. Gems like But Beautiful, Can’t Get Started With You, Had You Been Around and Solitude needs real radio airplay on any jazz station. This collection of song shows why she has had a singing career for over 4 decades now. I urge the novice to the true Diana Ross fan to add “Blue” to their music collection.

Ms. Ross continues to rule “supreme”. In this age of flashy pretenders..the sheer length of this Lady’s career and influence speaks volumes. BLUE is a work of sheer pleasure…candles, a chilled glass of wine, and DAT PERSON…what else is there to say! Ms Ross IS the BOSS…loved her when I first heard Baby Love and still loving her through these BLUE times….

I love Diana’s voice, but Blue has some low notes as well as high ones. “Solitude” is absolute perfection, as she notes at the end of the recording when she says “Good one.” It’s flawless. The arrangement for “I Love You Porgy” did not serve her well. She has a small “but beautiful” voice and she really has to reach vocally on that one. It’s uncomfortable to listen to. Still, “What a Difference a Day Makes” and “Easy Living” are among the other gorgeous tracks. I’ve always wanted her to record more jazz and blues. I treasure this recording. Thanks, Motown.
