When was the classic girl group era?

By , About.com Guide

Question: When was the classic girl group era?
Answer: The classic girl group era began arpund 1960 and petered out sometime in 1966, although that never stopped some of the more famous girl groups -- the Supremes, for example -- from continuing to score hits. In general, however, pop music became more sophisticated around the mid-Sixties, and the advent of the British Invasion proved damaging to American rock and roll (for a short time, anyway). In addition, the self-imposed exile of producer Phil Spector, the rise of female consciousness, and the move towards grittier dance music helped derail the phenomenon. There will always be a market for all-female bands, whether because of novelty, real talent, or both, but they don't usually employ the classic girl-group sound.
