New Orleans Jazz and Heritage Festival 2006 Guide

A handy guide for oldies music fans

By Robert Fontenot, About.com

The New Orleans Jazz and Heritage Festival is an embarrassment of riches for music lovers, touching not just upon jazz music but also lots of R&B, blues, rock, gospel, world music, hip-hop, and cajun/zydeco. So how can an oldies fan best spend his time at the 2006 "Fest"? Here's a handy day-by-day guide from yours truly, who's been going since he was a child.

Friday, April 28

11:20 am - 12:10 pm: David Egan
Acura stage
An excellent singer-songwriter who bridges the gap between swamp-pop and blue eyed-soul.

1:05 pm - 2:05 pm: J. Monque'D Blues Band
Sheraton New Orleans Fais-Do-Do stage
Ugly, ugly blues-rock from one of Uptown's best.

2:15 pm - 3:25 pm: Johnny Sketch and the Dirty Notes
Southern Comfort Blues stage
One of the city's favorite jam-band acts, but with real soul and humor.

3:35 pm - 5:10 pm: Bob Dylan
Acura stage
What else needs to be said? Expect the master to go electric and acoustic.

5:40 pm - 6:55 pm: Dr. John
Acura stage
The man behind "Right Place Wrong Time" has a long history inextricably tied to New Orleans rock and R&B.

Saturday, April 29

11:30 am - 12:30 pm: Belton Richard and the Lousiana Aces
Southern Comfort Blues stage
Legends of Cajun music who inject quite a bit of swamp-pop into the genre.

12:55 pm - 1:45 pm: Clarence "Frogman" Henry
Southern Comfort Blues stage
He'll do all his early rock hits, from "Ain't Got No Home" to "(I Don't Know Why I Love You) But I Do."

2:50 pm - 3:40 pm: Eddie Bo
Sheraton New Orleans Fais-Do-Do stage
His "I'm Wise" became Little Richard's "Slippin' And Slidin'," and he's also responsible for mid-Sixties funk classics like "Pass The Hatchet."

3:40 pm - 4:55 pm: Luther Kent and Trickbag
Southern Comfort Blues stage
The local R&B band of the Seventies, featuring a singer who once fronted Blood, Sweat and Tears (!).

5:30 pm - 6:50 pm: Etta James and the Roots Band
Southern Comfort Blues stage
Best known for "At Last" and "Sunday Kind Of Love," the newly-rejuvenated Etta's a blues diva incarnate.

Sunday, April 30

11:25 am - 12:25 pm: Papa Grows Funk
Southern Comfort Blues stage
One of the city's best pure funk bands.

12:35 pm - 1:35 pm: John Mooney and Bluesiana
Acura stage
A straight blues guitarist who nevertheless takes a lot of cues from New Orleans' classic boogie-woogie and funk.

2:30 pm - 3:30 pm: Walter "Wolfman" Washington and the Roadmasters
Congo Square Louisiana Rebirth stage
A guitarist who's backed Johnny Adams and Irma Thomas, and a well-kept secret.

3:35 pm - 4:50 pm: Allen Toussaint with Elvis Costello
Acura stage
The songwriter behind so many national R&B hits of the Sixties and Seventies reunites with his favorite post-Katrina collaborator.

5:25 pm - 6:55 pm: The Meters
Southern Comfort Blues stage
The band that took funk from James Brown into the Seventies. Best known for "Cissy Strut," but there's much more where that came from.
